On the second day of her working visit to Israel, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė met with Speaker of the Knesset of the Israeli Parliament, Amir Ohana, to discuss bilateral relations, the security situation in Europe and the Middle East, and other issues of mutual relevance.

Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the energy blackmail that it has been using as a leverage for many years, is a warning for the present and the future about the dangers of authoritarian regimes and dependencies on them, and yet another motive for world democracies to deepen their bonds, despite the separating distance, said the Prime Minister.

The meeting centred around national and regional matters. The parties also discussed bilateral collaboration, notably university partnership success stories.

Commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust and issues of historical memory were also among the items discussed. The Prime Minister emphasised that efforts to remember and pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust will never suffice, as they cannot match the magnitude of the tragedy nor fully compensate for it. However, remembrance and maintaining an honest approach towards history remain crucial.
