Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis has extended congratulations to Iceland’s Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson and the people of the country on the occasion of the National Day.

“The relations between Lithuania and Iceland are based on important historical links. More than 26 years ago, Iceland was the first country to recognise our statehood. The support expressed at an extremely difficult time for Lithuania will always remain in our nation’ memory. Today, we are happy to have shared positions and take joint efforts in ensuring secure future for the Nordic-Baltic region”, reads Prime Minister’s letter.

The Prime Minister concludes his letter by wishing all the best for the people of Iceland.

Iceland had been part of the Kingdom of Denmark until it gained its full independence on 17 June 1944, when it became the Republic of Iceland.

Iceland was the first foreign country to have recognised Lithuania’s independence back on 11 February 1991
