Today Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis has met Vice President of Vietnam Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh.
“This year we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of our diplomatic relations. It is an excellent opportunity to deepen our bilateral economic, political and cultural relations, all the more so because we have great potential for that”, said Skvernelis.
According to the Prime Minister, although the bilateral trade volume between Lithuania and Vietnam is not high, it is becoming obvious that there is considerable potential in the fields like food industry, medical devices, chemical products, IT, electronic equipment, lasers, renewable energy and aircraft maintenance. “We have the experienced professionals and are pleased with excellent achievements here, which should be undoubtedly attractive for the potential investors”, said the Head of Government.
The meeting has focused strongly on the joint efforts of both countries in combating illegal immigration, for Lithuania’s experience shows that the Vietnamese citizens frequently fall victim to the phenomenon. “They fall victim to the international organized crime groups acting across several countries. We have a duty to prevent this and provide all the required support, and the planned agreement between the Governments of our States on the readmission of persons would serve the purpose greatly”, said the Prime Minister.
Deputy Minister of Public Security Nguyen Van Son, who attended the meeting, said that efforts are made to speed up signing of the agreement. He has also stressed that Vietnam is interested in close cooperation between the border services and law enforcement institutions of both States in order to prevent illegal immigration, and that this cooperation will only strengthen.
The Head of Government has highlighted to the Vice President of Vietnam an opportunity for the Vietnamese students to get quality higher education at the Lithuanian universities, and has invited the Vietnamese citizens to discover Lithuania as a tourist destination with plenty of natural and cultural values.
