Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis: Slovenia is our reliable and like-minded partner

Yesterday, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis met with Speaker of the Slovenian Parliament, Milan Brglez.

The Prime Minister confirmed Slovenia’s importance for Lithuania as a partner in the EU and NATO, and as one of the most important trade partners in the region. According to Prime Minister Skvernelis, Lithuania and Slovenia have great potential to enhance cooperation in the fields of chemical industry, plastics, electronics, high technology, life sciences and pharmaceuticals.

The Prime Minister welcomed the like-mindedness of the two countries on many foreign policy issues, including NATO, the Eastern Partnership, the promotion of the EU values, etc. “Small countries as we are, we are very close in our spirit of vigorousness and determination”, noted Saulius Skvernelis.

The Speaker of the Slovenian Parliament thanked Lithuania for having been the second country to recognize their independence in 1991. He was also appreciative of Lithuania’s assistance to Slovenia during the peak in the migration crisis in 2015, when our country was among the first to send a police group to help resolving the situation.

Milan Brglez noted and commended Lithuania’s steps towards energy independence from Russia.

Among other items discussed were EU’s future prospects, the need for solidarity and closer cooperation, the issue of immigration and ways to address it more effectively.
