Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis: Italy is Lithuania’s trusted partner

Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis has met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella. The Italian leader has payed a visit to Lithuania on the occasion of the centennial of the restoration of the state of Lithuania.

The Prime Minister emphasised Italy’s importance as a trusted partner of Lithuania.

“Lithuania greatly values our close political, economic and cultural ties, as well as our cooperation in the EU and NATO.”

The Prime Minister has pointed out that the Government attaches great importance to EU initiatives aimed at adherence to the principles of EU security or fundamental values.

“We highly value Italy’s role in maintaining international peace and security and its influence in international organisations.”

The Prime Minister has wished success to Italy as it takes over the steering of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), recalling this as a great challenge for Lithuania back in 2011. The meeting has also touched upon the issue of migration.

The interlocutors have recalled the centuries-old historical contacts between the states. 500 years ago (18 April 1518), the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Sigismund the Old married Bona Sforza, a member of the powerful House of Sforza thaqt ruled the Duchy of Milan. A huge wave of Italian culture flooded into Lithuania, which resulted in works by Italian architects and painters that are now a significant part of Lithuania’s cultural and artistic heritage.

The Head of Government has also noted the highly active bilateral commercial-economic cooperation, along with growing tourist flows, growing cooperation in high technology, innovative services sectors and innovative branches of conventional trades.
